Straight from Curitiba – 8/8/2019 – 489 days of resistance – 8:30 PM

1. The greatest popular leader in Brazilian history, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has been arbitrarily imprisoned since April 7, 2018 - victim of a political persecution which is becoming more and more obvious with every day that passes. Due to this, representatives from the Associaçõ de Juizes para a Democracia (Association of Judges for Democracy/AJD) traveled to Curitiba to deliver a letter in defense of freedom for Lula and Brazilian Democracy. During a visit to the Lula Livre Vigil on this Thursday afternoon, August 8th, the judges read passages from the letter, which was delivered to the former President by his biographer Fernando Morais and by the author Raduan Nassar. 2. After delivering the letter to Lula, Morais and Nassar spoke to the activists and the judges who wrote the document at the Lula Livre Vigil. “Lula was very touched by the letter. It was no accident that Raduan and I delivered this letter the day after another violent act committed against Lula (…) We happily carried out the task you gave us and delivered the letter with great honor,” said Fernando Moraes, whose next book will be about the two political imprisonments of Lula – in 1980 and the one that is underway. Raduan said, “Lula is a politically imprisoned President and this is unbearable for us.” Read more here:

3. The intimidating attempt to transfer Lula from Curitiba to São Paulo, a decision which was barred by the Federal Supreme Court, is still generating repercussions in the legal world. This Thursday, August 8th, the criminologist and doctor in state law from Pontifícia Universidade de São Paulo (PUC-SP),  Pedro Serrano, said that it was a “cruel and insane attempt to get revenge for the leaks,” published in the Intercept Brazil, which show a series of irregularities and manipulations in the Lava Jato investigation process.
