1. In times of setbacks, the 2019 Carnaval will also serve as a stage to show indignation at the current political situation in the country. And, as could not be otherwise, ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has begun to inspire the songs of the masses. One example is the carnaval march, “Solta a Jararaca”, an initiative of the Alvorada Collective, in Belo Horizonte. More than a protest against the political persecution suffered by the former President, the song also pays tribute to the man who is considered the most popular leader Brazil ever had. 2. This Tuesday, February 19th was the birthday of the football legend Sócrates, one of the icons of democracy in Brazilian football. During his career, in which he spent most of his time on Lula's favorite team, Corinthians, the midfielder fought for the Diretas Já campaign and other progressive causes. In 2011, Lula spoke of his friend. “Doctor Socrates was a champion on the field and a great friend. He was an example of citizenship, intelligence and political awareness, in addition to having great talent as a player.” The former athlete died in 2011; if he were alive he would have turned 65 today. 3. PT National President, Congresswoman Gleisi Hoffmann (Paraná), and Senator Humberto Costa (PT-Pernambuco), party leader in the Senate, are spending this week in a series of events and meetings with European lawmakers to discuss, among other things, the campaign to free Lula. Several European parliamentarians have expressed interest in visiting the former President in Curitiba. This Wednesday, February 20, the schedule continues with members of the European Parliament's social democratic block. 4. The Lula Livre Vigil took advantage of the “Good Morning President Lula!” shout on this Tuesday, February 19, to march around the federal police headquarters building in Curitiba, to increase the resistance for freedom for the ex-President and against the removal of rights proposed by the right wing extremist government of Jair Bolsonaro.  With representatives of social movements from across the country, the greeting also served to convoke the entire population of São Paulo to participate in the demonstration against the dismantling of the pension system scheduled for this Wednesday, February 20.
