Curitiba – 8/20/2019 – 500 days of resistance – 8:55 pm

1. “I don’t know if I’d be able to face the fight I’m fighting today if it weren’t for the courage and the support of the men and women who make the Vigil a space of democracy, dignity and a huge amount of resistance to the arbitrary rule that has taken over our Brazil,” wrote former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a letter to activists present at the Vigil – a vigil that has not failed once in 500 days and nights in maintaining its support for and solidarity with Lula, who is today the world’s best-known political prisoner. The letter was read out during an event that took place tonight at the Vigil. Read more here:

2. The coordinators of the Free Lula Vigil also described, in another letter, the sentiment that has surrounded all those who – for one day or 500 – have already felt the energy emanating from the place of resistance in Curitiba. “We will remain organized as the Free Lula Vigil, which is today the main symbol of the struggle for the recovery of Brazil’s democracy, a policy project for our country, and social rights for her people,” reads an excerpt from the document. In Brasília today, after an event held in the Green Room of the House of Deputies of the Federal Congress, leaders of the PT and social movements went to the Ministry of Justice and Security in a demonstration against former Judge Sergio Moro, for his flagrant abuse of the law in the Lava Jato investigation and as one of the parties most responsible for the institutional crisis in Brazil. At the symbolic event, PT national president Gleisi Hoffmann and PT leader in the House, Paulo Pimenta, reinforced the need to put pressure on the Supreme Federal Court so that the judicial branch of government can bring about a return to the rule of law and the immediate release of former president Lula. 5. The launch of the Moro Mente (Moro Lies) campaign by the Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD), which took place in São Paulo on the evening of Monday (August 19), was another motive for a letter from former President Lula.
